Request the building’s financial and insurance documents and ask which services dues cover. Verify parking rights, storage, elevators, guest access, rental policies and any pending assessments. Obtain an insurance quote for your responsibilities as a unit owner.

Compare the property, not a broad label

Start with the exact address, floor plan and condition. Ask for association documents, recorded restrictions, outstanding assessments and current insurance quotes. Compare the total monthly cost, including maintenance, with a budget you are comfortable carrying.

Try your actual week

Visit at different times and test your routes to work, groceries, recreation and the places that matter to you. Check the walking route itself, parking, building access and amenity membership requirements. A neighborhood description cannot establish how a specific home will work for you.

Build a useful shortlist
